water, or water/methanol injection
- water, or water/methanol injection
A method of increasing thrust or boosting the thrust from a gas turbine engine operating from hot, and/or high-altitude, airfields. The injection of water increases the mass flow while methanol acts as an antifreeze and an additional source of fuel. The injection of water or methanol into the compressor inlet reduces the air temperature, thus increasing the air density and the consequent thrust. On axial-flow turbojet engines, the mixture is usually fed into the combustion chamber. A water-alcohol mixture may be injected into the induction system of a reciprocating engine operating at full power to get additional power.
